16/02/2019 Caerleon Vs Dowlais Match Report

WRU LEAGUE DIVISION 1 EAST

CAERLEON 24pts.  DOWLAIS 27pts.

This was a much needed win and a deserved win by Dowlais, with several players returning after injury and making their first appearance of the season which was most welcoming and made a significant improvement. Lloyd Hynes making his first appearance for some eighteen months showed that he  had not lost any of his controlling skills, Jake Howard returned from Bedlinog and Daniel Butler back after another long injury, all made their presence felt.
Dowlais started at 100 miles an hour and were quickly into a 10 point lead, through an exellent try from Jake Howard, and it did show how we have missed his pace, a conversion and a penalty from Sion Martin gave Dowlais a 10 point lead. Dowlais were having the better of the forward exchanges, Adam Cullen taking 11 consecutive lineouts including all the home throws. Young no8 Joel Braddock continues to improve with every game.
With the interval approaching Dowlais allowed Caerleon in for a simple try in the corner, but immediatley  hit back from the drop out with a try in the corner  from Jack Chambers to make it 15-5 to Dowlais at hallf time.
The second half turned out to be a cracker with the home team upping the pressure and getting on top of the Dowlais eight and succeeded in securing a penalty try and making it a 3 point game.
Dowlais had to steady things and this they did by bringing on experienced prop Jamie Cross for his first taste of rugby  for some time, and veteran centre James Quirk. These replacements had the desired effect James Cross secured the scrum for Dowlais enabling them to move the ball up field and Jake Howard securing his second try the two points added by Sion Martin.
But Caerleon hit back with their third try and a nail biting finish for the spectators, with the referee now playing well into time added on, a last charge up field by Dowlais in search of the bonus point try saw the ball handled it seemed by every Dowlais player and young second row Morgan Thomas securingn the touch down . The players were expecting the final whistle but the referee played on which was now 15 minutes  of added time, which was time enough for Caerleon to pick up their bonus point try and conversion, and still the game was not over, Dowlais thankfully saw the game out much to the relief of their supporters and coaches.
This was a terrific game to watch with the standard of Rugby a credit to both sides and to League 1 East.
