11/12/21 Blaenavon v Dowlais Admiral National League 1 EAST Match Report

Dowlais spent most of the first half defending in their 22. They managed 2 visits to the hosts half and came away with 2 penalties by Nathan Pritchard and a 6-0 lead.

The Dowlais scrum was on top throughout the half so it was a surprise to see them concede a penalty try right on half time allowing Blaenavon to turn around 7-6 in front.

Worse was to follow ,at the start of the second half Dowlais was caught napping and conceded a 7 pointer and a long range penalty from the home no10 who was pulling the strings for the hosts. So 3 minutes to half time and 5 minutes into the second half Dowlais had conceded 17pts. and seemingly putting the game beyond Dowlais , so Blaenavon seemed to think, but this Dowlais squad is made of sterner stuff.

With fresh legs coming on from the bench the fight back was on.

Dowlais now took the initiative and the wind out of the home side.

Now entering the final period Dowlais broke into the home 22 and Dowlais flanker Luke Price who was out standing broke through the retreating defence for a great try, Nathan Pritchard adding the extras. It was now a one score game.

The match was now entering the final minutes, and with Blaenavon tiring and committing penalty after penalty and conceding a yellow card for their prop , Dowlais sensed blood.

Young hooker Shane Chambers who had come on as a replacement burst forward with the rest of his pack behind him and was driven over for the try and the win in the last play of the game.

The jubilation at the end was well earned and worth seeing. The previous 2 games saw Dowlais draw with Monmouth in the last minute and lose to Brynmawr in the last play last week, so this close win was well deserved and credit to everyone .
