28/12/2019 Dowlais Vs Brynmawr Match Report

WRU LEAGUE DIVISION 1 EAST

Dowlais: 3

Brynmawr: 31

A predictable defeat for a depleted Dowlais side this weekend at home against Brynmawr.

From almost the beginning of the match, a vast difference in attacking power was clearly visible, with Brynmawr’s forwards completely outclassing the Dowlais pack in the scrum and Dowlais struggling to retaliate, remaining on the defensive almost all game and having any short-lived bursts of offense destroyed and quickly being sent back to their own twenty-two for more frantic defence. With that said however, Dowlais defended valiantly all game, making an admirable defensive effort considering the sheer length of time which they had to defend.

However, as the score surely shows quite plainly, Dowlais’ defence was still not enough to stop Brynmawr from racking up four tries and a bonus point throughout the game and their attacking efforts were nowhere near enough to close the score gap.

Although Dowlais defended admirably for the first twenty minutes or so, Brynmawr’s offense proved too much at the end of the first quarter, earning the visitors their first of four converted tries. Despite a penalty kicked by Steve James shortly after succeeding to close the gap slightly, Dowlais’ situation worsened by conceding another converted try shortly after. After a penalty to Brynmawr and an eventless last couple of minutes, the first half drew to a close 17-3. The second half passed by in much the same way, despite Dowlais putting up a respectable defence they failed to put any more points on the board all through the half and conceded two more late converted tries, securing Brynmawr’s bonus point and ending the game 31-3 to Brynmawr.

Considering their depleted numbers due to other commitments from its players and their previous difficulties facing Brynmawr in the past, overall Dowlais gave a solid effort defensively and even came close to scoring a couple of times, even if those chances were swiftly dismantled by Brynmawr and converted into even more pressure on Dowlais.

With a full force back on the pitch next week, Dowlais hopes to get a win away at Newbridge.
