14/12/2019 Senghenydd Vs Dowlais Match Report

SPECSAVERS NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 EAST

SENGHENYDD 13pts  DOWLAIS 23pts.

Dowlais achieved their first double of the season and this after only 6 League games which reflects on the dreadful weather we have had leaving us six games to make up.
This was a game between two evenly matched sides , the first quarter saw no scores from either side , with both defences on top.
However Dowlais opened the scoring with a back line movement ending with wing Kristian Owen going over in the corner, conversion by Steve James. The home side hit back with a penalty from L. Blakley, and Steve James followed with a Dowlais penalty.
With half time approaching Dowlais failed to cover a kick to the left wing  where B. Whitall swooped to cross in the corner L.Whitall adding the extras. Each side added a penalty before the break to make the interval score 13-13.
This was to remain the score right through most of the second half with Senghenydd doing all the attacking and Dowlais all the defending. The bench of Simon Griffiths , Joel Braddock, Kyle Prosser and Jamie Cross added fresh legs and impetus to proceedings. Then Dowlais was reduced to 14 men with the no10 sin binned.
Entering the final 10 minutes Dowlais finally broke free of their own half for the first time this second half.Winning a scrum just inside the home half the Dowlais pack completly destroyed the Senghenydd eight ,worked the ball up field and vitally retaining possesion and from a maul the pack drove Lloyd Morgan over for the vital match winner the tight conversion was by Lloyd Hynes with Steve James off the field. The effort was drained from the home side with them winning all the possesion and missing two second half penalties they new the game was lost.
To rub salt into their wounds the returning Steve James slotted a late penalty and rob Senghenydd of  a losing bonus point.

This was a much needed win for Dowlais and the whole team fronted up and absorbed all the pressure exerted by Senghenydd and had enough belief to keep going right to the end for a well deserved win.
