13/04/2019 Dowlais Vs Blaenavon Match Report

WRU LEAGUE DIVISION 1 EAST

Dowlais: 17

Blaenavon: 5

A solid and commendable win for Dowlais this week at home against Blaenavon. Compared to their last bout with Blaenavon, Dowlais held control of the game from the start and showed merciless efficiency in attack in the opening minutes, running through the bewildered Blaenavon defense and scoring an early try, touched down by Lewis Williams and converted by Sion Martin.

Following this, Dowlais remained possessive and persistent in Blaenavon’s half, unfortunately not quite getting over the line a second time and having to compromise with a penalty kicked by Sion Martin, bringing the score to 10-0 to Dowlais.

The windy conditions continued to be a problem for Blaenavon, foiling their long-passing, winger-centric style of play, forcing them to go straight at the Dowlais forwards who held them at bay with ease.

Dowlais remained calm during the closing minutes of the first half, with themselves scoring just before half time for once, touched down by Luke Dudley and converted by Sion Martin once again.

Having escaped from the jaws of death many times on their own line thanks to either a well-timed penalty or Blaenavon knock-on, Dowlais went into the second half with a relative and welcome for once feeling of ease. While they failed to put a single point on the board in the second half, a middle of the half, non-converted try for Blaenavon notwithstanding they defended valiantly and they gave supporters a feeling of ease and control that assured them that the excellent attacking work put in during the first half wouldn’t go to waste.

Even after going two men down in the final ten minutes due to a yellow card on Craig Lynch and red card on Sion Martin, Dowais remained calm until a kick to touch ended the game and put them out of the relegation zone, going three points above the newly troubled Caerleon, who only have a game to go while Dowlais has three remaining.

Next week, Dowlais play Ynysybwl at home.
