04/05/2019 Dowlais Vs Nelson Match Report

WRU LEAGUE DIVISION 1 EAST

Dowlais: 40

Nelson: 5

A glorious and one-sided victory for Dowlais this week to cap off their second half season comeback at home against Nelson.

Unlike their uneasy but nevertheless well-earned win against the side last Wednesday, Dowlais well and truly dominated the vast majority of this final game.

After a steady back and forth in the opening minutes, a perfect bounce from a Nelson kick and an incredible run from Tom Griffin, Darryl Jenkins and finally touched down by James Woods gave Dowlais their first try of the game, converted by Sion Martin.

Dowlais truly controlled the first half from this point on, putting a stop to most of Nelson’s plays before they could even begin and valiantly defending on their own line successfully when it came down to it and further scoring two more converted tries in the half, with the first coming from a breakthrough by John Davies and the second ran by Darryl Jenkins, both of which converted again by Sion Martin.

Entering the second half with a largely uncontested 21-0 lead, Dowlais continued much in the same vein into the second half, quickly earning their final bonus point of the season with a fourth try scored by Luke Dudley and converted once again by Sion Martin.

Nelson continued their attacks similarly to the first half from this point, with Dowlais putting up the same equally unmoveable defence. Dowlais didn’t stop the tries with their bonus point however, two equally impressive tries Sion Martin converting his own try this time before capping it off with an unconverted try, once again scored by Luke Dudley.

Nelson wouldn’t stay pointless for the whole game however, getting onto the score board with a last minute unconverted try, somehow though I doubt it dampened Dowlais’ celebrations.

Any Dowlais supporter would really have to stretch to find any complaints in this final performance. As expected from their comeback, Dowlais showed incredible attacking prowess and dominated the scrums all game, their six tries being a testament to that. The score also speaks for itself when it came to defence. The Dowlais boys never seemed to exhaust all game and never wavered in any aspect all game, a truly spectacular performance to cap off a season most Dowlais supporters would agree has been quite the emotional rollercoaster.

Dowlais had a more than rough start to the season, only getting three wins in the season’s first half and spending all but the last three months of the league in the relegation. That all changed with one inspiring win away at Caerleon and a bit of momentum behind them. Since that game Dowlais only lost a single game at home to Penallta and with this victory have ended the season on a six game win streak and have managed to long past claw their way out of relegation and now finish the season at fifth, a comeback that won’t be forgotten at Dowlais RFC for a while.

With this game as the swansong for two Dowlais regulars, Chrisie Williams and Craig Lynch, I don’t think anyone could have asked for a better send off for the two and for this phenomenal season.
