20/01/2018 Pontypool Utd Vs Dowlais Match Report

This was a tough encounter on a very heavy pitch played in constant drizzle. The defences of both sides were well on top and most of the play was between the 20 metre lines, and the try lines of both sides were very rarely threatened.
The home team were quickly in the lead when from the kick off Dowlais infringed and full back R. Tovey slotted the 3 points.
The lead was short lived with the Dowlais no 10 Steve James making it 3 all. With the sticky conditions playing a big factor the passing of both sides was sometimes hit and miss. The Dowlais pack was having the better of the forward exchanges and well on top in the scrums.
On the stroke of half time United nudged ahead with another penalty from full back Tovey , to make the scoreline 6-3 to Pontypool United.
The second half was much the same with Dowlais on top but unable to break the stubborn home defence, the Dowlais eight were having a storming game, Craig Lynch leading by example, and followed by Keiran Barnett,Adam Cullen and James Churchill, the Dowlais backs tackled like tigers and man of the match James Quirke used hie experiance to marshal his backs and stop the home attacks  with some thunderess tackles.
The Pressure that Dowlais was putting on up front resulted in the home eight opting for the dreaded passive scrummaging, which saved United in the final 20 minutes. After some more good work from the forwards Dowlais pulled level with a penalty from Steve James.
With the effect of the passive scrummaging on Dowlais  they were unable to exert enough pressure on Pontypool United to clinch that winning score.
But on reflection and taking into account the conditions both sides will pleased with their two point for the draw.
Saturday Dowlais entertain high flying Penallta K.O. 2.30.
