DOWLAIS 28PTS. HEOL Y CYW 27PTS.

WHAT A GAME. This match was a great advertisment for community Rugby and Division 1. It had everything , good weather and two sides intent on playing attractive rugby in front of an appreciable crowd.
Heol Y Cyw started at a rate of knots and completely overwhelmed Dowlais with their attacking rugby and were quickly into an 18-0 lead with two penalties and a conversion from no 10 P.Cooper and a try apiece from wings J. Fox and L.Gibbon and it looked ominous for the home team,Steve James kept the Dowlais score moving with 2 penalties, to make the half time score 18-6 to the visitors.
The second half would need something special  from Dowlais to over come the defecit. Steve James improved things early on with 3 penalties to put Dowlais within 3 points of  Cyw. The visitors pulled further ahead with 2 penalties from P. Short.
Then a piece of brilliance earned Dowlais their first try, an attack took play into the Heol y Cyw 22 Steve James chipped to the corner for wing Bleddyn  Rees to run onto, the ball seemed to be going out of play but the wing acrobatically jumped to palm the ball down to Tom Griffin who crossed wide out, to make the score 24-20 to Heol Y Cyw. With time now running out Steve James put over his sixth penalty , and now it was a one point game to the visitors.
The game seemed to be slipping away from Dowlais when another penalty from the Cyw no10 put them 27-23 in front. A try was the only way that Dowlais could now win. With the referee indicating that the next stoppage would be the last play.
Dowlais launched their last attack and with the ball travelling through what seemed every pair of hands on the Dowlais team, it ended up with Kristian Owen tight on the touchline and seemingly unable to make it over the line, but he evaded the last tackler to squeeze over in  the corner, and with the  conversion failing, the referee blew up for full time, and a dramatic one point win for Dowlais ,  which sent the home supporters estatic.
This was a tremendous second half fight back with every player giving 110% effort, and it would be unfair to single anyone out because every one of the 20 man squad played their part.
But this was a harsh lesson learned today and will surely be taken on board by the coaches this week, that Dowlais have to start the game the way they finished it, and not give the opposition a lead, and then have to play catch up Rugby, but congratulations to the team and coaches.

Saturday Dowlais are away to Cardiff side Rumney, the coach leaving at 12.30.
